Mets ink Sandy Alomar Jr. to minor league deal

02/19/2007 - Port St. Lucie, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New York Mets have signed catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The 40-year-old Alomar played in 27 games last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers before being traded to the Chicago White Sox on July 23. Alomar hit a combined .278 with eight doubles, one home run and 30 RBI in 46 games.

Alomar was the 1990 American League Rookie of the Year and has been an American League All-Star six times in his career (1990-92, 1996-98). He also was the MVP of the 1997 All-Star Game and a Gold Glove winner in 1990.

In 1,369 major league games, Alomar has hit .274 with 248 doubles, 10 triples, 112 home runs and 588 RBI with San Diego, the White Sox, Colorado, Texas and the Dodgers.

Alomar's father, Sandy Sr., is the club's third base coach.

Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
