Stumpel, Jokinen shine as Panthers edge Caps

Hockey Betting Lines

02/28/2007 - Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jozef Stumpel notched the game-winning goal in the shootout and Olli Jokinen recorded his third hat trick of the season, as the Florida Panthers edged the Washington Capitals, 6-5, at the Verizon Center.

Stephen Weiss and Juraj Kolnik also scored for the Panthers, who have won two straight games. Ed Belfour made 28 saves in the win.

Alex Ovechkin registered two goals and two assists for Washington, which has dropped five of its last six games overall (1-3-2). Brooks Laich, Brian Sutherby and Kris Beech each added a goal in the setback. Washington goaltender Brent Johnson allowed four goals on 15 shots in the first period and was pulled in favor of Frederic Cassivi, who stopped 17 shots in relief.

The Panthers were very busy prior to Tuesday's trade deadline. The club made three deals: injured forward Todd Bertuzzi was sent to Detroit for Shawn Matthias and draft picks, defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski was shipped to Pittsburgh in exchange for a fourth-round pick in this year's draft, and veteran forward Gary Roberts was also traded to the Pens in a separate deal for blueliner Noah Welch.

As for the Capitals, they sent forward Dainius Zubrus to Buffalo in exchange for center Jiri Novotny and a first-round selection in the 2007 Entry Draft.

The teams entered overtime tied at 5-5, but neither side could find the back of the net during the five-minute session. The first two shooters missed in the shootout before Stumpel scored and Belfour stopped Ovechkin as Florida won its fourth straight against Washington.

The first period contained seven total goals and concluded with the visitors leading, 4-3.

After Kolnik's eighth goal opened the scoring less than two minutes in, Jokinen scored the first of his three goals at the 7:39 mark. He received a cross-ice pass at the bottom of the left circle from Rostislav Olesz and pushed a backhander past Johnson at the right post.

That right post proved to be a popular spot once again just 20 seconds later when Florida grabbed a 3-0 advantage. Ruslan Salei's shot from the left point was deflected by Martin Gelinas and the puck squirted free. Weiss was all alone with a wide open net at the right post and tapped in his 14th goal.

But the Capitals stormed back with a pair of goals in the middle stages of the opening stanza. First, Ovechkin took the puck down the left-wing side on a partial breakaway and fired a wrist shot from the lower portion of the circle past Belfour only 42 seconds after Weiss' goal.

With 7:46 remaining, Washington cashed in on the power play to cut its deficit to 3-2. With Olesz in the penalty box for interference, John Erskine passed from the left point to Ovechkin along the near-side half-wall and Ovechkin's centering pass was redirected into the cage by Sutherby.

Jokinen's second goal made it 4-2 with 2:15 to play. The Panthers worked the puck around the perimeter while on the power play and nearly scored on several chances. With the two-minute minor winding down, Jokinen held control at the top of the right circle and faked both a shot and a pass. Finally, after holding the puck for an extended period of time, he released a slap shot that lit the lamp exactly as the penalty expired. The even-strength goal was the Florida captain's 27th of the season.

A great deflection by Beech on the power play capped the scoring in the period. Bryan Muir sent a shot from the point and Beech, facing away from the net, stuck his stick out and redirected the puck into the cage. The shot was headed five feet wide of the net before Beech's redirection at 19:04.

At the 3:29 mark of the second period, Jokinen completed his hat trick with a snap shot from the top of the left circle on a 3-on-2 rush.

Not to be outshined, Ovechkin answered with his second goal of the game later in the period that brought the Caps within 5-4. Skating with the puck in the offensive zone, Ovechkin headed toward the blue line to find open ice. He shifted between a pair of Florida defenders and, from near the centerpoint, spun around and sent a lazy wrist shot toward the net that found its way past Belfour with 2:06 remaining before the second intermission.

Washington's third power-play tally of the contest tied it 6:07 into the third period. With Weiss in the box for roughing, a one-timer by Laich from the right circle deflected off the skate of Florida defenseman Salei and trickled under a surprised Belfour.

Game Notes

Other deadline deals for Washington that were executed on Monday included forward Richard Zednik going to the New York Islanders and defenseman Lawrence Nycholat was shipped to Ottawa for defenseman Andy Hedlund and a sixth-round pick in 2007...Jokinen's other two hat tricks this season occurred on November 16 against Montreal and January 10 versus Pittsburgh. He has four career hat tricks...Florida has now won 12 of the last 15 games against the Caps...Washington fell to 14-13-6 at home this season...Ovechkin now has 37 goals this season...The Caps were 3-for-5 on the power play and held Florida scoreless on its three chances with the extra skater.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
